Abstract (English):
Based on the material of several synonymic rows related to the field of law, the article shows the possibility of differentiating ideographic synonyms in English. The synonymic rows that served as the material of the study include “arrest” – “detention” – “apprehension”, “attack” – “assault” – “battery” and “defamation” – “libel” – “slander”. By means of such a variety of semantic analysis as the analysis of dictionary definitions, we distinguish the groups of semantic features, the presence or absence of which in the semantic structure of the term in English, as well as their specific correlation are differentiating characteristics for each term in the synonymic rows under consideration. Compilation of a denotative matrix is an effective tool for semantization of lexical means and their activation when working on the topic of oral speech, since the matrix contributes to the establishment of strong paradigmatic links in the sublanguage of the profession
