The article contains the authors’ justification for the problem of the legal nature of criminal responsibility, as a historically established state-legal format and a way of responding to socially dangerous acts (crimes). Criminal responsibility is the conceptual legal structural basis of Russian criminal law, expressed in the norms of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. It reflects the dialectical connection and the conditioning of the crime and punishment. In the mechanism of criminal responsibility, punishment has been and remains a key way to protect the most important social values. It also acts as a measure of responsibility as sanctions of articles of the Special Part of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Modern social dynamism also changes the content of criminal policy. This is reflected in the expansion of the forms of criminal liability by achieving correction of the subjects of the crime by releasing them from criminal prosecution, punishment and the application of other measures of criminal law coercion.
