The article is devoted to the study of trends in the development of a unitary model of the state territorial structure in the states of Europe. The author noted that unitary states prevail in European countries, but in recent years there has been a tendency to transform traditional models of territorial state structure. The events of the political history of the 20th century infuenced the modern forms of the territorial state structure of European countries. Currently, they are infuenced by the processes of European integration and the concomitant increase in the economic and political independence of the regions within the European Union. It is concluded that in the European states today there are multi-level systems of territorial division: formal (administrative) and informal. It is noted that with a unitary form of organization, the regions began to strive for greater independence, as a result of which the process of decentralization in European states became in demand.
