The article examines the varieties of the national currency of Russia and the prerequisites for their development. The analysis of the volumes of cash and non-cash payments and their share in retail turnover, their positive and negative sides are studied. The prerequisites for the emergence of a digital currency and the relevance of its introduction within the current economic environment are investigated. The regulatory framework for the use of digital money in Russia has been studied. The positive aspects of the introduction of the digital national currency are identified and summarized.
