Abstract (English):
This article examines the development of the prison system of the Russian Empire after the creation of “The Guardianship Society for Prisons” in 1819, as well as trends in humanizing the process of serving sentences and correcting convicts. The text provides an overview of the work of the prison system, which interacted with religious and charitable organizations and public associations (using the example of the Don Cossack Army). The author identifies the main trends and prospects for interaction between penitentiary institutions and religious organizations in the pre-Soviet period.
